Short-form editing: rules that make Reels and TikToks click

The first 3 seconds of a Reel decide everything. If the viewer doesn’t get a reason to stay in that time – scroll. Short-form editing follows different rules than long form and it’s worth knowing them before you send a brief to an editor – or before you start cutting yourself.

1. Hook in the first second

There’s no room for a slow intro, animated logo, or building mood for 10 seconds. The first shot must ask a question, show the end result, or evoke emotion. 'Before you see how I did it' always beats 'Hi, today I’ll show you...' – because the first creates tension, the second doesn’t.

2. Cut pace to the music – but with sense

Cutting on every beat looks good for 10 seconds, then it’s boring. A better rule: keep the music rhythm as a base, but don’t be afraid of longer shots that 'breathe'. The contrast between fast and slow makes fast cuts look fast.

3. Vertical format is not cropping – it’s thinking

9:16 is not 16:9 cropped top and bottom. Good short-form is shot or framed with the vertical screen in mind: action in the centre or upper third, text at the bottom, horizontal movement goes beyond the frame. If footage was shot horizontally and is converted – you have to choose what stays in the frame.

4. Subtitles – always

60-85% of viewers on Instagram and TikTok watch without sound. Subtitles are not an addition, they are a requirement. Good short-form editing has subtitles synchronised with speech, formatted legibly (large, contrasting, one sentence at a time) and animated subtly – not every word has to 'pop'.

5. Transitions yes – but only when they make sense

A 360° spin transition looked impressive a few years ago. Today good short-form editing is based on match-cut (shot ends with movement, next continues it) and jump-cut for pace. A flashy transition without narrative justification is just effect for effect’s sake.

6. Ending = call to action

The last 2-3 seconds are your only moment for a CTA. Text on screen, arrow, simple animation. 'Click the link', 'Follow', 'Comment X'. Without this the viewer finishes watching and scrolls on – and all production effort doesn’t translate into results.

7. Match length to platform and goal

  • TikTok: 15-60 seconds works best for reach. Longer forms (3-5 min) are growing but that’s a different content category.
  • Instagram Reels: 15-30 seconds = maximum organic reach. Up to 90 seconds for in-depth topics.
  • YouTube Shorts: up to 60 seconds. Here content value matters more than just the visual hook.
